There is nothing worse than the wait for a new jersey — and then discovering it does not fit. Too tight across the chest, sleeves too short, or swimming in fabric. Ordering a football shirt online should not feel like a gamble.
This guide walks you through exactly how soccer jerseys are supposed to fit, the only three measurements you need, full size charts, and the mistakes that lead to most returns. Five minutes now saves weeks of waiting later.
How a Soccer Jersey Is Supposed to Fit
There is no single "correct" fit — it depends on the version you buy:
- Fan (replica) version — a relaxed cut with room through the chest and body. This is the classic stadium look. It sits comfortably over a T-shirt and matches the size of your everyday clothes.
- Player version — an athletic, close-fitting cut designed for movement. If you are between sizes here, always size up.
- Retro shirts — vintage jerseys were cut more generously than anything made today. If you normally wear a medium, a retro medium will feel noticeably roomier — order true to size for the classic look, or size down for a modern fit.
The golden rule across every version: when in doubt, size up. A slightly loose jersey looks good; a shirt that is too tight does not get worn.
Measure Yourself: The Only Numbers You Need
Skip the guessing. Grab a tape measure and take two numbers:
- Chest — wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, keeping it level. Do not pull tight.
- Waist — measure around your natural waistline, just above the hips.
Then compare your numbers against the chart below. If you land between two sizes, choose the larger one — and if you prefer a looser fit, that is one more reason to size up.
The Complete Size Chart (S–5XL)
Our fan-version jerseys follow this chart (measurements in centimeters):
- S — Chest 100–104 · Waist 94–98 · Height 160–170 cm · Weight 55–60 kg
- M — Chest 108–112 · Waist 102–106 · Height 170–175 cm · Weight 60–70 kg
- L — Chest 114–118 · Waist 110–114 · Height 175–180 cm · Weight 70–88 kg
- XL — Chest 124–128 · Waist 116–120 · Height 180–185 cm · Weight 88–96 kg
- 2XL — Chest 130–134 · Waist 126–130 · Height 185–188 cm · Weight 96–110 kg
- 3XL — Chest 142–146 · Waist 134–138 · Height 188–192 cm · Weight 110–130 kg
- 4XL — Chest 150–154 · Waist 146–148 · Height 188–192 cm · Weight 130–150 kg
- 5XL — Chest 158–162 · Waist 152–156 · Height 188–195 cm · Weight 150–170 kg
These are body measurements, not shirt measurements — the jersey is cut slightly larger than the numbers above to give you that comfortable stadium fit.
Women's Sizing: Slim by Design
Women's jerseys are tailored with a slimmer body and a shaped waist, so they run smaller than the men's chart. Our women's sizes cover S to L:
- S — Chest 86–89 cm · Waist 81–84 cm
- M — Chest 89–91 cm · Waist 84–86 cm
- L — Chest 91–94 cm · Waist 86–89 cm
Because of the slimmer cut, many women find they need one size up from their usual clothing size — especially if they prefer a relaxed fit. If you like an oversized look, consider the men's version in your regular size instead.
Kids' Sizing: By Age and Height
Kids' jerseys are sized by age rather than by letters, and height is the best guide (our children's sizes run #16 to #28):
- #16 — 2–3 years · Height 94–104 cm
- #18 — 4–5 years · Height 104–114 cm
- #20 — 6–7 years · Height 114–124 cm
- #22 — 8–9 years · Height 124–135 cm
- #24 — 10–11 years · Height 135–145 cm
- #26 — 12–13 years · Height 145–155 cm
- #28 — 14–15 years · Height 155–165 cm
Children grow fast — when your child is between sizes, choose the larger size. A slightly roomy jersey will still fit next season; a tight one will not.
Five Sizing Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing by letter alone. Every brand cuts differently. Always check the measurements, not just the S/M/L label.
- Assuming a jersey fits like a T-shirt. Fan shirts are roomier than t-shirts; player versions are much tighter. Adjust accordingly.
- Ignoring the version. The same size in fan and player versions fits completely differently. Check which one you are buying.
- Buying kids' sizes "to grow into" — two sizes up. One size up is smart; two sizes up is a tent that gets worn twice.
- Not thinking about how you will wear it. A jersey worn over a hoodie in winter needs more room than one worn on its own. If you are in doubt, pick the size that covers both looks.
