NBA jerseys may have the most complicated edition system in sports. Two purple Lakers shirts can belong to completely different collections, cuts and price points. Before the 2026/27 season, understanding that system is more useful than following any single trade.
The five common editions
- Association Edition: usually white, the closest thing to a traditional home jersey and the easiest first purchase.
- Icon Edition: the team’s primary colour, the most recognisable edition and the one most often treated as the classic.
- City Edition: changes every year and draws on city culture, community or a special theme. It has the strongest collector appeal and the shortest shelf life.
- Statement Edition: typically dark or high-contrast, built for visual impact and streetwear styling.
- Classic Edition: a throwback to a historical jersey, with period colours and typography for retro fans.
Swingman vs Authentic
Swingman is the fan version: more affordable, lighter fabric, heat-applied graphics and a looser cut. Authentic is the player version: heavier fabric, a closer fit and details that mirror what is worn on court, at a noticeably higher price.
If you mainly wear your jersey day to day, the relaxed Swingman cut is often more comfortable. If you care about collecting, details and silhouette, Authentic is worth the upgrade. Neither is inherently better; they serve different purposes.
How to choose a size
NBA jerseys usually run from S to 3XL, but sizing varies by brand and edition. The reliable method is to measure your chest and preferred body length and compare them with the specific product’s size chart, rather than guessing from your usual T-shirt size. Size up for a looser look, and leave extra room if you plan to layer over a tee or hoodie.
Women’s and youth cuts are not simply scaled-down men’s versions; shoulder width and body length differ. If you are buying for someone else, check the actual size chart first.
Everyday styling
Jerseys work best with relaxed bottoms: cargos, straight-leg denim or sports shorts. Let the jersey be the only high-saturation piece and ground everything else in black, white, grey or beige. For more depth, add a white base tee underneath or layer an open short-sleeve shirt over the top.
Lakers purple and gold, Warriors blue and yellow, and Bulls red and black are all easy palettes to style. For a first purchase, start with the team’s primary colour rather than a City Edition that changes every year.
Washing and care
Heat is the enemy of jersey graphics. Wash inside out on a cold, gentle cycle, skip the dryer and never iron directly over the print. Dry in the shade to protect both colour and application. For storage, hang on a wide-shoulder hanger inside a dust bag rather than folding, which helps the jersey keep its shape.
Three questions before you buy
- Am I buying this to wear or to collect? Choose Swingman for wear, Authentic for collecting.
- Can it work with at least three bottoms I already own? If not, wait.
- Do I actually like the player or team, or only this year’s colourway?
